点评:I discovered this historic site more or less by accident. Shortly after driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and arriving at on the Eastern Shore of Virginia I saw a sign on U. S. Route 13 directing Visitors to the Custis Tombs. Later while having lunch, I did a little research and decided to visit later in the afternoon on the return trip. The actual historic site is located about 2.5 miles off Route 13. There is a small gravel parking area with storyboards detailing the history of Arlington Manor and the Custis Family who settled here in the 1600’s. Just follow the well mowed grass path from the parking area to the Tombs that are surrounded by a brick wall. Here are the final resting place of John Custis II, and John Custis IV. On the way you will pass the footprint of the Arlington Manor House that is marked by post at each corner. John Custis IV was the grandson of John Custis II, and is the father-in-law of Martha Dandridge Custis, the wife of Daniel Parke Custis. Following his death in 1757, Martha Married George Washington in 1759. The Custis Tombs appear to be located in “someone’s back yard”. But rest assured, visitors are welcome. If you are a fan of History this is a site that you should consider visiting if you find yourself on the southern end of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
