A Must-Visit for Understanding Kagawa’s Climate, History, and Kukai Legacy

点评：I visited Manno Reservoir in mid-April 2026, after visiting Kotohira-gu Shrine. The reservoir is only a short drive from Kotohira, but it offers a very different kind of experience: quiet, spacious, and closely tied to the agricultural history of Sanuki.
Manno Reservoir is the largest irrigation reservoir in Japan, and seeing it in person made me appreciate how important reservoirs and irrigation ponds have been in Kagawa. The Sanuki region is known for relatively little rainfall, and this point was underlined in 2025, when Takamatsu recorded the lowest annual precipitation among Japan’s prefectural capitals. Against that background, Manno Reservoir’s role in local agriculture becomes much easier to understand.
The site is also historically significant because of its association with Kukai, who is said to have helped repair the reservoir in the early Heian period using civil engineering knowledge he had gained in Tang China. Subsequent enlargement and repair works over the centuries brought the reservoir to its present impressive scale.
I first tried to visit Karin Kaikan to learn more about the reservoir, but unfortunately it was closed on the day of my visit. However, there were detailed explanatory boards near the reservoir, although only in Japanese. I was especially interested to learn how many times the embankment had collapsed and been rebuilt over the centuries, with the present form completed in 1959.
This is not a flashy sightseeing spot, but for anyone interested in history, Kukai, civil engineering, or the way water shaped agriculture in Kagawa, Manno Reservoir is well worth a stop.
