点评:This museum opened last autumn. The layout of the galleries is a mess, why they are arranged like this is down to the architects. That said, the exhibits and the displays are outstanding. Two floors cover the history of Clarke's shoemaking factory. I was particularly interested in how Clarks made a colourful range of shoes for Jamaican rock stars. All manufacturing was moved abroad in the 1990s, and the factory buildings were flattened to built Clarks Village. Another gallery displays some world-class Icktheosaur ossils that were carefully retrieved by one of the Clark brothers' nephews.
Sadly the Museum is difficult to find, as the signage is utterly atrocious. The Museum should be marked on the finger signs. It seems that Clarks no longer owns Clarks village, while the Museum operates as an independent trust. The managers apparently do not realise that the fortunes of the village and the museum are intertwined. While this state of affairs persists, the Museum is allowed to advertise on its own land. Given the short-sighted village managers, I suggest the Museum should fly an orange blimp above its roof - one that can be seen across the entire village site!
