Magic in the mountains south of Cuenca…

点评：We knew of Bellavista from our Ecuadorian friends and finally made the trip there on a sunny Sunday morning. From near Féria Libre, a taxi dropped us off for $6 and we found ourselves surrounded by lush grassy fields through which flowed clear streams carrying water from the mountains all around us. Peruvian meadowlarks sang in the meadows. Sebastian called out as we approached and gave us a warm welcome. We saw a new foal happily cantering around his training field next to a proud mother.
We took time to absorb the smells and sounds of a well-run working horse farm, beautifully set in a small valley. The buildings reflected considerable thought, aesthetic experience, and effort. The friendly chief farm dog, Choc, said hello. The horses were relaxed and happy. All of this ambience put us at ease. It was impossible not to smile.
It was time to mount our horses, Oreo and Caramelo. Led by Cristóbal, an experienced superb rider who also happened to be 9 years old, and accompanied by Choc, we set off down a country road with a cheerful Sebastian following.
Rather than spoil the adventure for future riders, we simply report here that we spent the morning and afternoon riding to and following the crest of the ridge, along the same path originally used by the Incans. The landscape was stunningly beautiful and bucolic, leading through pine forests and flower-lined wild avenues. We were enchanted.
We urge anyone seeking an unforgettable experience in the mountains surrounding Cuenca to email or WhatsApp Sebastian at Bellavista. Despite living in Cuenca for years, our only regret is that we did not come to Bellavista sooner. Now that we know it, and know how simple it is to get to it, Bellavista and Sebastian are on our most favorite experiences list.
