I was dropped off by my driver thinking this was the Sade village I agreed to visit- this definitely is not. An auntie pretty impatiently and aggressively showed me how to use the loom. Then, a young lady showed me around the area and told me a little bit about the culture of the area and significance of some of the fabric before taking me on a photoshoot. I knew it was a red flag seeing no prices on anything, but I found some beautiful jacquard fabric that I really liked and hadn't really seen anywhere else. When I asked how much for each piece (roughly 2.3 meter)- they quoted 1.5 million rupee. I thought that was for TWO pieces of fabric, but, no- that price for roughly 2.3 meter. I sew clothing on the side in one of the most expensive countries in the world, Singapore, and don't even pay this price for quality fabric there.
Hearing "American" mixed in with some Indonesian confirmed multiple times made it clear they saw me as a cash cow. You would sell a LOT more if your establishment just had some reasonable prices labeled- westerners hate being treated like they are an ignorant money machine. It just sows seeds of mistrust and resentment. Most of the other fabric I've seen around Lombok for much cheaper, and it's obviously not handwoven by old women and children living in bamboo huts. They try to sell the place as a "co-op," but co-op give credit to each individual artisan or seller and track their sells so they're properly credited- this place does not at all.
Ultimately, I agreed to pay roughly 60% of the original quoted price for only one piece. I think is more fair for the quality and unfair unique pattern- handwoven or machine woven.
