点评:My trip was a circular walk from Deansgate to the Quays. Along the Bridgewater canal to Old Trafford, then back along the Ship Canal to Deansgate.
The overall impression was of an historic industrial area, which had been redeveloped.
There are beautiful remnants of 19th Century architecture. Cobbles, railway bridges, stone walls, etc. I can imagine 150 years ago. The whole area would be have buzzed with vibrant, smokey and grimy industry
There would have been ships of all sorts, steam trains, cranes, horses, carts, trade, commerce, etc.
After WW2 the industry left.
Clearly there has been much investment, trying to create a new purpose for the area, whilst preserving what is left of the historical architecture.
There is new canal side housing, shops, commercial and retail. Lots of glass, concrete, red brick, modern fencing, benches, signs, odd ornamental features, etc.
However, there is also a feeling that this rather forced investment has only partially succeeded. There is still an impression of decay.
This time it is the modern development which is decaying. Graffiti, rusty metal, peeling paint, litter everywhere. Plastic bottles, bags and beer cans in the water. Weeds growing through the pavers. Clear signs that municipal pride is not there. No sign of landscapers, clearing weeds and rubbish. Nobody repainting the crumbling modern infrastructure.
The canals themselves have almost no boats. Empty, apart from the odd rust bucket. Why are the waterways not teaming with boats? Where are the arrays of colourful houseboats, tied up along the miles of quayside moorings?
I also visited Old Trafford for the stadium tour. That was great! The building had history, but it also thrives today. Immaculately clean and maintained. Football is a modern industry which is not in decline.
Quite a contrast to much of the surrounding area.
Unfortunately.
