点评:This isn’t a large property with audio visual displays, gift shops and cafes and in some ways that makes the visit more ‘real’, with a better feel for how it would have been in the 18th century, with a garrison of redcoats. This is also reflected in the entry price. This property is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland and admission was free to us as members. Definitely worthwhile joining as it allows free access to Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castles as well as loads of others and you get half price entry to English Heritage properties in your first year of membership, after which it’s free. Corgarff is unusual in its star-shaped outer wall design, which was added to the original tower, and its location is just stunning, particularly when it first comes into view in winter, surrounded by snow, as you head along the A939 – an image that is found on many a calendar. The history of the castle is rich in Jacobites and whisky production (legal and illicit) and has links to Craigievar Castle, which we had visited the previous day. There is a small car park just off the A939 at Cock Bridge after which you need to walk steeply uphill on a short track to actually get to the castle. It’s been restored, with rooms laid out as they would originally have been when there was a garrison, and there was access to 4 floors during this visit, including the basement, as well as an outhouse. Story boards tell the history of the castle. There’s not a huge amount to see compared to other castles and the visit was comfortably concluded within an hour. One of the highlights to watch out for is the swifts who nest on the top of windows. The castle is only open until the end of September each year and you should be aware that there are no toilet facilities. Definitely worth stopping for though, particularly if you’re a Scottish history buff. I got the guidebook, which was interesting to dip into afterwards and learn a bit more about the history.
