Unexpectedly fantastic!

点评：We've been to some great zoos over the years, thanks to my animal mad daughter.
This little gem is startlingly good! It is a privately developed, owned, and run enterprise; the matriarch of the founding family still lives on the property and the majority of those involved in the day to day operations are members of that family. Driving up to the property I have to honestly say I was disappointed, because it looks almost like an ordinary midwest dairy operation, but we have a saying in my family: "it's either a good time or a good story."
Well, this was both a great time, and a great story!
The zoo is much larger than it appears from the road, and they have an impressive collection of animals (including the red panda that drew us to the zoo) kept in nice enclosures. The staff is friendly and super knowledgable. They share a lot of information about conservation efforts, and about how they support these efforts both in the zoo and worldwide. There are opportunities to interact with the animals, but staff is very insistent that these are wild creatures and that the animals set the boundaries for the interactions.
There were many families with young children, who all seemed particularly drawn to the great playground across from the giraffe enclosure. Frankly, the relatively small size of this zoo would make it particularly appealing with young children, because it is far more manageable than many zoos.
That daughter is already planning trips back later this summer, when they expect the completion of two new displays, for big cats, to introduce more of her friends to this amazing little zoo!
