Not so much surf lessons as becoming part of the Smart family

15 years ago a young Sam Smart taught me how to surf, off season in Sennen. Skip forwards a few years and 2 kids, we had tried surf lessons on holiday in Europe and many times in Cornwall but the children had never managed to catch a wave by themselves, let alone stand up. Last year on a whim really I searched to see if Sam was still teaching and we took lessons with his wife Hollie… my daughters loved it so much we came back this year… 5 surf lessons each, the focal point of the holiday and the source of so much laughter and joy.
Both Sam and Hollie taught us, we all caught waves, all stood up… that would be impressive enough. What Sam and Hollie bring is an utterly beguiling love of surfing, Sennen and teaching. Sam is an ex professional surfer, yet his enthusiasm for every wave tried, his relentless encouragement makes everyone feel as though they are shredding to the highest possible standard. Hollie is unbelievably patient, had an immediate rapport with my daughters and even surfed tandem with my youngest.
This isn’t being taught to surf by a business, this is being taught to surf by a family, and you become part of theirs. Thank you to everyone who taught us, but a huge thanks to Sam and Hollie who made us all feel so very special. What these guys do, can’t be manufactured or bought in, it’s something truly unique and we will see you next year if not before!
