点评:This is the very interesting site of Alabama’s first state capital, the site of a Civil War prison and a town visited by Lafayette. We took a tour with Jonathan, who was knowledgeable and pointed out things we would not or might not have noticed had we toured ourselves. The old town of Cahawba covers a lot of ground. You can either drive in your car to each site or they have bicycles available. It would be a little too far between sites to see on foot. Now for my four-star rating: Alabama is a state rich in history. But as with other historic sites I’ve seen in Alabama, little has been done to preserve that history. In Old Cahawba, there are only remnants of buildings remaining, and by remnants, I mean pieces of brick foundations imbedded in the soil that you have to look hard to see. When I asked Jonathan why there is not much standing above ground (with the exception of two houses), he said over the years the buildings were dismantled and the bricks and building materials were used for other things. I wish the state had taken more care to preserve this important piece of history. Historic buildings and structures are priceless; bricks are a dime a dozen. I do which we had allowed more time to wander around. We spent about two hours and could have probably spent another hour.
