Handsome but dilapidated church and yard barely worth the effort
St Matthews Anglican Church Windsor的点评
点评:This church is lauded as the oldest Anglican church in Australia with design by architect Francis Greenway to the orders of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. There is much information available on the web, but this is a review only of our visit.
Our experience was poor. We visited on a Monday. The church exterior is handsome but a closer view reveals much dilapidation & decay. The church was closed so the interior (which supposedly holds much of its charm & interest) was not accessible.
The historic churchyard was very, very unkempt and overgrown. It looks nothing now (Jan 2026), like the pics on Google from a few years ago. There were some interesting and poignant graves to be found, but without any guide to significant plots of interest (e.g. "1st fleeters").
It's a good 20 minutes walk from the town center.
We felt our visit barely worth the effort.
