点评:This cozy museum, housed in a historic building that has been both a girls' school and a house of ill repute during its long and colorful history, houses the Anschutz Collection, hundreds of examples of art inspired by the American West from the nineteenth century to modern times. There is much work that is familiar in terms of this theme (Frederick Remington, Georgia O'Keeffe), but even more by artists that were unfamiliar to this viewer but no less worthy of examination. On each floor there is also a parlor set with furniture and other historical objects. All this can be toured either with a live docent or with the aid of a dense, informative audio tour. The only drawback is the crowded display, with paintings almost touching each other on every wall. This makes the frequently ornate placards of works close to the floor difficult to read and lessens the impact of individual works. Still, the quality of the art makes this well worth a visit. It may be noted that no photographs are permitted, even without flash.
