点评:This house museum was the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle in 1795. It’s an unassuming building, unsurprisingly since Caryle’s father was a humble farmer and stonemason. There are three rooms. Downstairs is the kitchen, with items belonging to the Carlyle family on display as well as common kitchen items of the 18th century.
There are two rooms upstairs. A bedroom typical of the 18th century i.e. small for a family by modern standards. There are personal items on display that belong to different members of the Carlyle family. The other room is tiny, almost like a narrow loft room and in here many of Carlyle's personal belongings are kept here along with a collection of portraits and photographs, including an unusual gold pencil case gifted by Mary Aitken Carlyle to Thomas. The great Scotsman also lived and worked in his house, and his writing desk, along with reference books are housed in this room.
