点评:The castle, dating back to the 12 century, is located on the rocks by the coast and is therefore quite picturesque to view externally even on days when it is not open to the public. Best to check online however when we visited in September 2024 it had only been open frequently during August and then at weekends during September. Sadly we were there midweek.
We were staying nearby at Seamill House Hotel and it is feasible to walk from there along the Ayrshire Coastal Path to Portencross. We took the easy option and drove the short distance in less than 10 minutes along a well surfaced single track road to the sizeable free car park very close to the castle.
Major restoration work was carried out in 2009 to save the castle from ruin and it is The Friends of Portencross who continue to take responsibility for its upkeep and on a voluntary basis for allowing access to the interior. It is apparently worth getting inside if you can as the visit includes a view from the roof and plenty of interpretation boards to provide information about the property.
We enjoyed having a look around the site which had an old cannon barrel lying on the ground nearby and plenty of rocks to clamber over for views of the tower from different angles. Although it was a day when the wind was bracing we still managed a walk along the track towards Hunterston, passing a little sheltered spot for boats and the Portencross Pier. The Ayrshire Coastal Path (details online) continues along that route.
