点评:I use this trail to commute by bike. The best part is the northernmost section between Roosevelt Island and Gravelly Point, which offers views of Washington, D.C.’s landmarks from across the Potomac River.
Unfortunately, most of the trail is narrow, crowded, disjointed, and beset with road noise from the George Washington Parkway. Some bridges are old to the point of being scary, and cyclists must contend with poor lines of sight and lots of tree roots protruding into the pavement.
Access to amenities is limited since there are no safe places to cross the GW Parkway on foot or bike. One exception is Old Town Alexandria, where can find plenty of eateries and shops. However, there is no dedicated path in Old Town; cyclists can use the streets. Another option is to take a side trail to Crystal City which is a bike- and pedestrian-friendly area thanks to recent improvements.
The trail picks up again south of Old Town. Heading south, it gradually becomes less crowded and features some scenic points culminating in the Mount Vernon estate. Recent bridge replacements have made this section a lot safer, but the paved surface is very uneven and the hilly terrain can be a challenge for some.
