点评:We visited on a sunny, warm, calm weekday. The island has a unique, timeless Channel Island-like ambience, and the village is a most pleasant place to wander round, with a good range of eating places at all price-points. The castle is quite fascinating, built by Edwin Lutyens for the first editor of Country Life magazine and the Trust has ‘dressed’ the rooms to give you a feel of what it must have been like to have been a guest in the early 20th Century. No display cases, no long boards of worthy text to read, the Trust has gone for a more immersive experience with some fun touches like a spilled wine glass on the dining room table, a smashed plate on the floor, and some wonderful waspish quotes from guest Lytton Strachey peppering the rooms! Parents will find much to point out to weary children (look for the I-spy cards in each room) including, when we were there, an engaging guide on the rooftops with a telescope trained on the nearby seal colony (and there were a lot of seals!). No cafe though, so stock up with drinks in the village, (there is a toilet on the first observation deck), and look for the quirky small Gertrude Jekyll-designed walled garden nearby; not a great deal flowering in April (lots of herbaceous and roses for June to September visitors though) but the potting shed is very characterful!
