点评:Mbonege Beach is only about 12 km northwest from Honiara, but it's about a 40 minute drive because the road is so bad -- you have to swerve constantly to avoid the endless potholes.
The beach itself is nothing special, a narrow strip of sand. The main attraction is the wrecks, which after 80 years have become two living coral reefs, with the metal hull and ribs of the ships just visible. They're in 3-4 meters of water, perfect for snorkeling. The water is consistently warm. Really just a fantastic snorkeling experience.
One negative: there's a sluggish creek behind the beach, which has pools of stagnant water. So there are a LOT of mosquitos in the shade. They won't venture far out into the hot sunshine of the beach, but slather on repellent and keep your car windows closed.
And two cautions: (1) Check the weather in advance. A little rain won't make any difference, and the beach faces onto Iron Bottom Sound so it's almost always calm, but check anyway. (2) When we were there, we discovered a really strong lateral current running parallel to the beach, sweeping us west. Interestingly, the current was only within a few meters of the beach. At the wreck itself, it was almost nonexistent. I've never heard of anyone having problems with rip currents at Mbonege, so this was probably an odd artifact of the tide conditions. That said, be mindful.
Otherwise, it's a great site to kill a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. There aren't a lot of locals -- apparently they tend to swim and barbecue on other beaches. There's an admission fee (which seems to fluctuate, but we paid SBD 100 for three people in a car). I'd recommend going before 10 AM or after 4 PM, when the sun is not so hot. You'll go past a couple of local markets on the way out, including the "house plant market" and the "betel nut market", and if you're feeling daring you can buy some barbecued chicken from a roadside vendor.
