点评:The museum has been closed the last 3 summers during their expansion program and this was my first time visiting the newly renovated site (I have regularly vacationed 2 weeks annually at Shawnigan Lake for many years and have visited the museum).
I approached the museum from the rear of the building and much to my surprise, there were 2 public washrooms there (extremely clean). Going around to the front of the building, I entered and my first aha moment was the wooden white railway sign in black lettering "SHAWNIGAN" and below was the train schedule for Victoria to Nanaimo and vice versa from decades ago. That brought back memories from the 1960's when our family would take the train from Victoria to Shawnigan Lake (we would get off at the Cliffside Station),
On entering, the personable and knowledgeable staff member Lori appeared and we got chatting and she led me to the highlight of the museum, which is a separate room constructed to recreate the workshop of the local artist E.J. Hughes. It is magnificent! There are original paintings and sketches of his on the wall.
The next room contains hundreds of items that reflect the lifestyle over the history of Shawnigan Lake. I sat in one of the students desks and read the book on it (probably Grade 1) . You could really spend a lot of time wandering past items such as crosscut saws to early century food cans & cutlery and lots more!
Another room is dedicated to the Kinsol Trestle with a scale model of a portion of it. To me, it was a work of art.
I am not ordinarily a purchaser, but I was so impressed with this museum that I came away with a Shawnigan Lake T-shirt. Very cool gift shop.
Thank you Lori and the team for a wonderful experience in the museum and all your work in bringing this project to fruition.
I will be back next year and hope to find a jigsaw puzzle of the Kinsol Trestle for sale.
