Impressive Battlefield Monument, stunning Circle Garden
Battlefield House Museum & Park的点评
点评:This was in our itinerary for Doors Open Hamilton weekend (free event, 03-04 May). Doors to the house museum literally open at 12PM but we arrived early to secure a good parking spot (free parking) and to explore the park without the crowds.
Entrance to the house was via the rear door. No guided tours during Doors Open. Museum interpreters were on hand only to direct visitors as well as answer questions. We checked out the kitchen, the upstairs bedrooms as well as the exhibit room where we read about the history of Battlefield House Museum & Park and looked at vintage photos. Retraced our steps downstairs then peeked inside the dining room where the most important artifact appeared to be the dining chair that Queen Elizabeth II sat on during her 1959 visit. Rope barriers or wooden gates are installed in a few rooms, like the bedroom and dining room, so we just looked in from the doorway. Afterwards, we were directed to the basement cellar, where the Gage family hid during the 1813 Battle of Stoney Creek.
Back outside, we decided to have another look around. The views from the manicured Circle Garden were stunning and we couldn't resist posing for more souvenir photos despite having already taken photos when we first arrived. We climbed the stone staircase to the base of the tower (no access inside due to the rainy weather?) and read the commemorative plaques by the closed doors. We actually spent more time in Battlefield Park than the house itself. There is a second house, the Nash-Jackson House, located close to the parking lot. Not sure if it was open, we only took photos outside.
It is interesting to learn that if the men in the historical society got their way, the 100ft tower would have been erected at Smith's Knoll at King St W, where the lion monument now stands. Good thing the women won because the Battlefield Monument looks impressive right where it is.
