点评:Public Transport:
Visited on a Sunday via 450 bus from Bergen, getting off at Sore stop. I followed the small road round the house and then hiked up via the well trodden paths towards the top. The path is well signposted, although it is very uneven in parts and has some steep sections. I wouldn't recommend this option in winter. Fortunately you only need to cover 700 meters to the top following which you can see some of the rock trenchworks indicating such. You actually come up very near the museum which only took me 40 minutes to do going up.
The Site:
You can browse round the outside area at your leisure and you will see a large command bunker, various trenchworks, bunkers and other earthworks together with some old rusted German equipment (some of the bunkers are fenced off for obvious reasons). Doing so will help give a better visual picture of how large the site was.
The Museum:
The museum itself is very good and has a lot of potential to be expanded. The rotunda glass building is visible at the top which serves as the entrance into the museum as well as a cafe and shop. Unfortunately this section is very small and was saturated with people (given the area is also a popular hiking spot) making it difficult to work out where I needed to get tickets and no tables or chairs were available as some were also taken by some waiting for the next tour. There is no guidebook to the site, and books on sale giving details of the site are all in Norwegian. Staff were helpful however.
You can browse the interior of the large casemate via stairs and some of the smaller exhibition rooms which give some context to the site, its construction, history and operations. There are small information boards in each room providing text in English and Norwegian. To go round these it would take about 40 minutes, so to get the most from your visit I recommend booking a tour as you can see much more of the site this way.
The Tour:
The tour lasted about 45 minutes and recapped very briefly the historical context provided in the exhibition spaces, before moving deeper underground through to the closed off areas such as the powerplant, munitions, barracks room, bathing areas, water plant and central corridor through to the central command bunker - some areas are still closed off to the public. You come to realise the magnitude of the site. Even though I was the only English chap on the tour, the guide was able to still provide a summary of what was being said to me which I really appricated and I learnt a lot from the tour. Well worth the extra money besides the standard entrance price. I cannot really recommend the tour to children however as the subject was quite dry for them and the couple of kids on this one really were quite bored as there are no interactives to keep their attention.
Summary:
It was implied the site/tour could be expanded when it comes to possibly opening other sections of the fortress (although it could take years to come to fruition). I really hope this is the case as it would make this perhaps the best WW2 fortress visitor site in Europe! It certainly has the scope! Only real criticisms mentioned above are the limited space in the entrance given how tightly everything is packed in and the lack of English materials to purchase about the site - smaller points in the overall grand experience of the site.
Would definitely visit again!
