点评:The Tolkien-like door at St Edward’s Church is one of the most Instagrammable spots in the Cotswolds. What you see here are two ancient yew trees with gnarly roots, standing either side of the heavy studded, wooden doors, almost as if they are standing guard.
I expected this to be one of those over-rated sights but they really are quite magical-looking. They are like something from a fairytale - an enchanted doorway that could transport you to another realm. J. R. R. Tolkien’s Doors of Durin are said to have been inspired by these ones.
Apart from the doors, the church itself is very striking and dates back to early medieval times. The stone church was constructed in the 13th century, with the tower added in the 14th. Inside the stained glass windows catch the eye immediately but we also noticed the beautifully hand-stitched tapestry kneelers. There must be hours of work in each one.
We spent a little time wandering through the grassy, green graveyard surrounding the church. We spotted some moss-covered, anonymous gravestones that were marked simply ‘1642-1646 / Battle of Stow / 21st March 1646 / In Memoriam’. During the Battle of Stow some 200 Royalists were killed in the market square next to the church and another 1500 were imprisoned inside the church.
We also spotted a number of ‘bale’ tombs - the ones with the strange-looking stone bundles on top. They belong to wealthy wool merchants who had grown rich from the Cotswold wool trade and the odd looking bundle is a symbolic bale of wool.
PARKING:
If like us, you have a car, then the closest and easiest parking will be in the market square in the centre of town. However it is often crowded and is limited to 2 hours.
