Visiting an Inuit culture with 4,500 years of history

点评：On the second day of an eight-day expedition called “West Greenland Ice Odyssey: Glaciers and Icebergs,” Quark Expeditions brought its polar ship, the “Ultramarine,” to Sisimiut (66O 49.5’ N, 053O 32.1’ W) and Nipisat (66O 56.4’N, 053O 40.8’ W). On the west coast of Greenland, with the Labrador Sea to the south and Baffin Bay to the north, Sisimiut is just above the Arctic Circle, approximately 320 km north of Nuuk.
Ferried between the Ultramarine and the public jetty, we disembarked and visited the community, whose name means “the residents at the foxholes” and has been inhabited for the last 4,500 years, home to the Saqqaq culture, then Dorset culture, then the Thule people, whose Inuit descendants now populate the area.
Upon landing, we joined a walking tour of the community – Sisimiut is the second-largest city in Greenland, located just north of the Arctic Circle. We visited the cultural museum, sampled local food, and met with villagers who maintain a craft shop run by local artists and craftspeople.
Earlier the same day the Ultramarine posted off the shore of Nipisat, and from our Zodiacs we cruised along the coastline of Aasivissuit-Nipisathas, which has been the hunting grounds of region for more than 2,500 years.
During the day we saw arctic fox, arctic hare, humpback whale, harp seal, snow bunting, Lapland longspur, common redpoll, northern wheatear, raven, Iceland and Glaucous gull, pomarine and arctic skua, northern fulmar, red-necked phalarope, common eider, and mallard.
