点评:We loved skiing at Kvitfjell, here's five reasons why.
Accessibility. Just a few hours north of Oslo, with easy access via road or train. None of the stress of say landing into Chambery, or fretting about the three hour road queues to pass through Moutiers into the Three Valleys.
You are going to have snow. It's Norway: it's cold, it snows. Add those together, and Kvitfjell holds its snow. We were there for Easter 2024 and enjoyed great conditions. If it's very cold, wear more. Yes, they did close it for a day in January when it hit minus 30 degrees C, but that is 'kin cold!
Fun pistes. If you haven't skied in Norway before, you will have to recalibrate your expectations. The mountains are nowhere as near a high as those found in the Alps, so runs are shorter and the drops take in less descent. But a good system of connecting lifts whisks you quickly from piste to piste, so you can cover an awful lot of mountain. And with three major facing slopes (Mellomstasjon, Vestsiden and Varden), if one side is catching cloud, there is a good chance it will be clear on the other side of the mountain. If visibility is poor, lots of pistes are in the trees; in low viz conditions it's still good to go, and if clear, and after recent snow, the troll-like trees and spindrift are just magical to ski through. Plus being Norwegian, there are fun parks, speed runs and timed slalom courses to enjoy. It's very family friendly. Oh, and the standard of skiing is breathtakingly high, there is a good chance you will be in the company of gold medallists. And if that's not enough, it is the Norwegian centre for Stöckli skis. If that brand is new to you, google them and then hire them
Good places for food and drink. Skiing in Norway has changed since I first experienced it (last century). Kvitfjell has great options to stop and refuel: Several in the Mellomstasjonen including the super cool racers' hang out, (Koia). Bistro, at the base of Vestsiden, where we enjoyed wonderful coffees and the best cinnamon buns ever. And the top of Varden, the Varden Restaurant, is warm, welcoming, modern and has a menu that goes much further than polser or pizza. The latter can be quite busy though, stop by early. We found the prices to be as competitive as the Three Valleys, though booze is more expensive.
You can ski a World Cup standard black, the Olypiabakke. It's just fab!
