点评:We booked this as a 3-generation holiday for the end of the school summer holidays - and what a memorable trip it was.
From the outset, our host Barny was really helpful – accommodating our changing arrival time (traffic on the M6!), helping us get our kit from the car (it’s about a 500m walk from where you have to park), and he helped us with firewood and to get a fire going so we could cook our evening meal. The next morning he was also really understanding about us being slow to pack up and get ready to get going with the horses and move to the next camp. And again, he was really kind at the end of the trip when it turned out I’d left my car keys in a silly place! What a guy.
We arrived late afternoon of Day 1, transferred our stuff from the car to the camp at Nutwood and got settled with the wagon. Barny brought the horses over the following morning, we helped brush them and then Barny harnessed them to the wagon. We set off mid morning, and arrived at the second camp mid afternoon. We had the evening, then the whole of Day 3 at the second camp, where some of us went for a walk, others snoozed and played, then on the morning of Day 4 we travelled back to Nutwood following a different route, arriving back around midday.
Barny is with you all the time the wagon is moving (and does all the tacking up and work with the horses), then makes sure you’re all set at the camp, before leaving you to it. He’s on the phone in case you need any help at any point, though.
The camp set ups are basic - this is NOT glamping! But it’s what you’re here for – getting back to nature and letting go of some of the faff and stuff of the 21st Century.
You filter your drinking water from the stream or from collected rainwater, have a compost toilet, and the bow top wagon to sleep in. The wagon is lovely – wooden fittings, with a patterned, insulated roof and decorated outside. It’s a bit like a picture book. It has a raised double bed and space on the floor underneath to put camping mats (two people would fit at a squeeze, but there wouldn’t be much floor space for the people above to get past them and into/out of bed!). There are a couple of simple cupboards to stash things, and two shelf seats. It’s sobering to imagine how a whole travelling family and all their stuff would fit in the space – it’s pretty little.
There’s also a canvas canopy behind the wagon which provides some shelter, and Barny provides a camp table and set of camping chairs.
We were 5 people, so had brought two small tents with us so we had a bit more sleeping space, along with mats, sleeping bags and pillows. It worked really well and meant we had some private space when needed and we could accommodate different bedtimes and waking up times more easily. We also brought our own bedding (duvet, sheets, pillows) to use on the double bed in the wagon, and an extra blanket in case the nights were cold.
Barny provides a large water filter, a set of pans, a kettle, sharp knives, cutlery, plates and cups, soap and a tea towel. There’s also a firebowl and trivet so you can position pans and the kettle over the fire really easily. We brought things like a cafetiere, grater and Tupperware, as well as food to cook, drinks, tin foil, kitchen towels, oil and condiments, matches, newspaper to get the fire going, and a coolbox to keep milk, cheese and meat cool.
We also took advantage of Barny’s local recommendations and had some fresh eggs and veg delivered from a local farm. It was so delicious and a great price, and it felt great that we were eating local produce and supporting a local farm business too.
There are no artificial lights anywhere (except for a pretty string of fairy lights), and it gets properly dark – so invest in headtorches for your group, and/or camping lanterns. And make sure you can charge them from battery packs, solar chargers or bring spare batteries. We didn’t use our phones much, but brought battery packs to charge them a bit anyway – you’ll need at least one phone on to liaise with Barny on the last day.
The area is gorgeous - part of the North Pennines national landscape, just near Penrith - curving single track lanes, blousy green lanes, strip fields, ancient trees and views to the hills of the Pennines and Lake District fells. And at night you can see the Milky Way. It’s lush.
Horses Meg and Biddie are lovely souls and it was brilliant to see how confident the children became with them, under Barny’s guidance (he does make it clear though that it’s up to you to decide what risk you’re willing to take – like the children sitting on the horses bareback). While we were camping in the orchard, the horses would just come over to our circle of chairs every now and then, to check in, hang out for a bit, then bimble off again. It was very sociable and an amazing way to share space with animals – not controlling them, but just sharing space and company. And while we were on the road with the wagon, Barny let my 6 yr old take the reins and drive the horses! What an experience!
There are a number of places on the route where everyone has to get out and walk rather than ride in the wagon – particularly on really bumpy bits, or on any steep hills. So be prepared to walk a kilometre or so - with shoes or boots to deal with wet and muddy tracks. There’s no rush though – you can take your time and Barny will wait with the horses further along the track. It’s a very chilled and pleasant way to travel, whether you’re rocking around inside the wagon or walking behind. It feels like you’re travelling in ancient footsteps/hoofsteps.
A journey with Wanderlusts is quite committing - you need the right clothes to enjoy it, so you can keep warm & dry in all weathers (lots of layers, full waterproof jackets and trousers, warm hats etc - even in summer. Don’t be fooled by the weather forecast – being outside for 18 hours means you can get pretty chilly and damp, even if it’s not raining!. And maybe do a couple of camping trips before this to work out what you need (and what you don’t!), practise cooking on a stove or fire, and check you don't mind not having a shower every day (we did a basic strip wash with flannels).
Barny’s set up is completely unique – living off grid, and so in tune with his horses, he’s a wealth of knowledge and a fascinating person to talk to. It’s pretty amazing that he is willing to share this way of life with us. If you like horses, camping and adventures....then this is your notice to book. We will be back!
