点评:This is trailed as one of the great European rail journeys by some travel companies but my advice is to steer clear.
The reality is that the best section is between Bergen and Myrdal and you can do that as part of a day’s tour from Bergen that also includes a fjord cruise and a trip on the excellent Flam railway. The views are also good beyond Myrdal for about 45 mins but this is simply not worth it for the following reasons.
First, the train is notoriously unreliable time wise. We left Bergen 15 mins late and just got later and later. Reasons given included signal failures, need to go slowly and police having to board to arrest a thief who was going through people’s luggage in one carriage.
Second, it is single track so, once late, you must wait for trains coming in the opposite side room and vice versa. More delays.
Third, the rolling stock is poor and old. Compared with some of the trains on scenic lines in Switzerland and Austria, it is inexplicable in the 2020s.
So, just fly to and from Bergen and take the tour and don’t bother with this. It’s expensive for what it is: a very poor railway line run by a state owned company.
