点评:I've been to Tyneham many times over the years and it's a wonderful place - very atmospheric and sad but in a way that keeps drawing you back to visit. Sadly over the past few years the lack of care from the MOD has become more and more evident - the toilets are now open again, but it seems the vast majority of the houses are now permanently blocked off and are being left to completely crumble away. When I first visited you could walk around most of the buildings, but now everything aside from the church, school, farm outbuildings and post office row, has been blocked off by ugly 6ft metal fences as they apparently deemed the buildings unsafe (don't know why, many of them look in better condition than post office row does!) and they have been left to fill with brambles. The church is starting to look a bit shabby in places too and while it may seem a silly thing to say about an 'abandoned' village full of derelict properties, there's an air of recent neglect to it which didn't exist before, it very much gives the impression that the MOD just don't give a toss about it.
Will I keep going back? Yes, the village has burrowed its way inside my skin! Will I be happy with what I see? If things continue to decline this way, no.
I would still recommend a visit, what happened at Tyneham is an important part of history, a reminder that politicians lie and its a beautiful part of the world, but the lack of recent care is highly disappointing.
Obviously do check on the government website for opening as its somewhat limited!
