Island Eco Tours : Huahine的点评
点评：I took a 4WD tour of the island with Island Eco Tours. The tour covered the diverse attractions of Huahine, both historic and natural. Our guide, Muriel, provided a lot of information about the places we visited.
Our first stop was a vanilla plantation. Our guide showed us a vanilla flower. The plantation is under cover to keep out the birds and protect the plants from the harsh sun. When the vanilla beans fall to the ground, they are ready to be harvested. Then they have to dry in the sun. They had vanilla products to sell, but, alas, ran out of vanilla ice cream!
The highlight of the tour for me was visiting the archaeological site of Maeva. First we visited the fortification wall for a royal residence from the 15th century. Then we saw a marae for a family. The posts in the centre are for a table for sacrifices--animal, vegetable, or even human.
The reconstructed Fare Pote'e was a meeting house. Now it is a museum. Inside were exhibits about the Maeva site and artifacts from Huahine.
Huahine is famous for its blue-eyed eels. You can see them at Faie. Our guide fed them mackerel. We then climbed to a belvédère to see where the lagoon opens up to the ocean.
Huahine is actually two islands. Originally they were connected by an isthmus. As the land eroded away, it became two separate islands. The northern island is Huahine Nui (big) and the southern one is Huahine Iti (small). We visited the Panorama de Tefarerii, at the southern tip of Huahine Iti. Note the different shades of blue in the water. Our last stop was Marae Anini, used by royalty in the 15th century.
