点评:This is an interesting and beautiful Lutheran Baroque church that you should see, especially if open but step inside even if it is closed. We visited on a Tuesday when the church is closed; however, we found the front door open to an alcove with glass doors so we could see the inside which is truly amazing and shocking for a Protestant church. While the town is known for the largest Romanesque building in the world which is also Catholic, it is this small, off Maximilianstrasse, Protestant church that is Speyer's most beautiful. How does this happen?
In 1689 in the 30 years war, Louis XIV has Speyer burned to the ground like many Germany cities in his wake, including the Speyer Cathedral. People don't really come back to the city for 10 years, and despite the large Catholic Cathedral, most of the population before and after the burning were Protestant. It 1700, those citizens decide to build a new church in the current Baroque style. They lack the funds for impressive stone, so they decide to paint the interior of the church with Biblical scenes something that would have shocked the original Protestant but now was acceptable. Between the woodwork and the painting, this is one of the most beautiful 18th Century or earlier Protestant churches you will find.
The glass door obscures some of the view and prevents you from getting a closer look. Still, it is great they at least allow you to see as even a far away glimpse shows you how beautiful this church is.
