点评:This was an interesting take on the classic play by Shakespeare who was clearly anxious to please his Tudor masters and wrote something of a character assassination! Poor old Richard was accused of all sorts of nefarious deeds for which there is little or no evidence and historians are now somewhat divided on what happened to the Princes in the Tower.
All that aside this is still Shakespeare and his writing is as impressive as ever.
The version we saw at the Studio was something of a mixed bag- on the positive side the acting was impressive for the most part (especially Richard3), the narrative largely stayed true to the original and the tension (albeit without props or special effects) was palpable (especially towards the end). On the negative side, some of the acting was weak and the use of female actors to portray male historical figures and vice versa was confusing.
The jury is still out on the issues of the modern dress and the unchanging scenery of a table banquet.
Overall I really enjoyed it and was glad to have read up on the subject matter beforehand otherwise I would have had difficulty in following what was happening (Shakespeare’s fault not the cast’s!).
If there is a similar show at the Studio I would certainly recommend grabbing a ticket!
