点评:When I was still in England, I saw breathtaking images and videos of the legendary Khan el-Khalili bazaar. There was one spot I specifically wanted to see at night, as it just looked so breathtaking. I managed to book all of the other activities online, but I struggled to find one where the tour guide would take you to the bazaar at night, when the magic commences.
I got in touch with Ghada from A1 Egypt Tours to see if she could accompany me to the bazaar. Ghada was my tour guide on my first day in Egypt and she helped me to settle in by constantly being positive about everything. Ghada had to check with her manager as this wasn’t something that their company was offering as a service. The manager thankfully approved my request.
During the car journey from my hotel to the bazaar, Ghada was constantly communicating with me, ensuring that I was not just left in the back keeping to myself. She stated various facts about the buildings that we would pass along the journey.
I brought water bottles with me and I said to her that she could have them as I wouldn’t go through all of them by the time I left the country in a few days’ time. She said that we could hand out the bottles to people in need as they could benefit from this. She gave one bottle to the driver, she got me to hand a bottle over to an elderly woman, and she gave the final bottle to a little boy who approached her. This just proves that Ghada is a very caring individual that takes care of others. I’m sure this would not have even crossed other people’s minds, and they would have just taken the bottles home with them.
Before we started exploring the bazaar, Ghada asked me if I wanted to have anything to eat or drink, to which I declined, as I was still full from my lunch. It was good that she asked me as she clearly did not want me to start the activity with an empty stomach.
Ghada made me aware that people do steal at this place and it was good that she mentioned this as throughout the time we were there, I made sure that I was very vigilant and I was aware of my surroundings.
Ghada knew the bazaar inside out (might be because she is a frequent visitor!) and I made a joke that she could close her eyes and still manage to find a stall that she wanted to go see. I noticed that she had a great rapport with many of the stallholders and she made sure I was part of the conversations with them to ensure I was having fun. Ghada took me to the iconic spot that I wanted to go see ever since my eyes first laid eyes on them when I was in England. I took plenty of photos and videos (attached one of the photos here). Ghada also took some photos of me as I walked down the steps and when I was looking at the merchandise.
As Ghada knew the bazaar so well, she straight away took me to this very cheap souvenir place and I was glad that she introduced me to this store, as I managed to purchase numerous souvenirs for myself and for my family. When I visited the bazaar during the day with another tour guide, he thought the place he took me was the cheapest place to get souvenirs, but no, the one Ghada took me to was! There were some items that I really wanted to get and she ensured we visited various stores to find out which one offered the lowest amount and at the same time, the highest quality.
We were at the bazaar for over two hours. Ghada mentioned that she did her work as a tour guide during the day and that she made an exception so that I could experience the bazaar at night, as she knew I had a strong interest in seeing it at night.
Ghada ensured that I got everything that I wanted, as she knew I was leaving the country in a few days’ time. For one of the products, I didn’t know which one to get, so I asked her if I could message my family group chat to see which one they liked, and she said of course. She ensured that I could take my time and it was good that she wasn’t rushing me or anything. As I could take my time exploring the bazaar and at the same time spend time recording and taking photos, I got given the opportunity to really take in the wonders of the bazaar in all its glory.
When we were waiting for our driver after we finished at the bazaar, an elderly man approached Ghada. Ghada explained to me after he was gone, as they were speaking in Arabic, that he said to her that he was waiting to speak to someone to ask for directions, but he was too scared to ask anyone. He saw her and he felt like he could approach her. This just proves that she is an approachable and likeable person. I remember she spoke to a taxi driver when she was helping the elderly man, so she went her way to help him. I know for a fact others would have just ignored him until he went away, as they would have seen him as a nuisance.
Ghada mentioned that she had to get up early the next day as she had a tour guide at 8. The fact that she came straight to my activity after finishing her day tour, finishing being my guide very late at night (around 10pm) and having to get up early the next day to do her next guide job, shows she went the extra mile for me to experience this. She knew I would have struggled to find anyone else to go with, so she picked up a unique job in order to allow me to witness seeing the bazaar at night (and to purchase the things I wanted to get plus anything else).
When I arrived at my hotel, Ghada said to check I had everything before I left the car. I had a quick glance l, but I didn’t really look, as I knew I had everything with me. When I entered the hotel, I realised that I couldn’t find the keys for my door. I spent a few minutes searching through my bag and all my pockets. I started panicking and I quickly messaged Ghada. Ghada straight away messaged me and said the keys were in the car. I forgot to put the keys in my bag, so they must have fallen out of my pocket. She made a light joke that she did say to me to check I had everything before I went. She left a voice message to say that the driver would return to my hotel after he dropped her off. As I knew my key was no longer lost, I could breathe again!
Ghada is very quick to respond, and a lot of the things I have mentioned (giving water to the poor, good relationship with the stallholders, elderly man approaching her as she looked like an approachable person, etc.) prove that not only is she a fantastic guide that goes out of her way to give a tourist the full experience, but that more importantly, she is genuinely a kind person. That is a very important characteristic to have to be a successful guide.
I mentioned to Ghada to speak to her manager and mention that I struggled to find a tour guide online where I would be taken to the bazaar at night, as this may be a gap in the market. I managed to book all of the other attractions online when I was still in England. It was just this one where I just could not find anything online. She said she would discuss this with her manager and this could be something the company could offer as a service some time in the future.
There were many other tourists at the bazaar, and it makes sense to have a guide with them, as they would know the market inside out, so they would know which stalls to go to that would offer the best price and quality, thus saving time. The guides would know how to negotiate and if any problems occurred, they would know how to de-escalate it. There was one with me where I was recording a stall and a young boy working there was shouting at me in Arabic. Ghada defused the situation by saying in Arabic that I was a tourist and I was just recording the stalls to look back on. This wouldn’t have been possible if I was alone, as I do not know the Arabic language. Whether they would have the same rapport with the stallholders that Ghada had, I’m not too sure about that, but it would be good to offer this as a service.
