点评:Located west of downtown Ankara, the Turkish Air Museum is not the easiest place to get to if you don't have a rental car. And to be honest, who wants to drive a rental car in Ankara!
So after a bit of research. I elected to use the Metro, from close to where I was staying (Kizilay station) via the M3 line to Bati Merkez. From there, it was about a 40 minute walk. The metro cost TL18 each way, great value.
Entrance to the museum cost me, an adult with no concessions, TL400. I was checked by Turkish Air Force personnel at an outer gate, then paid my entrance fee inside.
Inside the modern building there is an exhibition on several floors. The bottom floor has the entrance desk and a small shop (models, magnets, patches, key rings, t-shirts, but no books). The walls are lined with interpretation boards chronicling the history of military aviation in Turkey. The boards are in two languages, Turkish and English, so I was able to read along happily. The Turks are hugely proud of their legacy, though it was enlightening to read such a fiercely patriotic hue on events. Also on the bottom floor, in several display cabinets, is a wonderful display of models that have seen service within Turkish military aviation. And they really are very well done, with a little information piece by each type.
Upstairs, a highlight was an exhibition celebrating the Turkish Air Force formation aerobatic display team, the 'Turkish Stars', and also 'Solo Turk', the solo F-16 display.
There is only one airplane inside, a 1930's vintage Miles Magister. But outside, you will find the genuine heavy metal, an impressive and eclectic display of military hardware. With my background, it was the fast-jets that held the most interest for me, but you can happily spend an hour wandering the grounds. The aircraft are reasonably spaced for photography, and although some a little sun bleached, most are in a fair condition. The interpretation board for each exhibit is again bilingual, with a generic history and description of the type, and then an individual history of the aircraft on display. There is also a small building with open cockpit access to a couple of types, and a pair of ejection seats to sit on. Don't try it for real, I have, and it hurts!
The small refreshment shop, also outside, didn't seem to sell much other than bottled water.
Overall, if you have an interest in military aviation, or want a family friendly couple of hours out, I can strongly recommend a visit here.
