A conservation-focused zoo with rare species and a refreshingly quiet feel

点评：We visited Hamerton Zoo Park on a weekday afternoon and found it very peaceful, with few visitors and plenty of time to explore at our own pace. At first, the zoo feels modest and understated, but as you walk further you begin to realise just how much there is here.
We were surprised to come across cheetahs extremely close to the public areas, and later learned that Hamerton holds one of the largest cheetah collections in Europe, along with a number of rare and unusual species not commonly seen in other UK zoos. It’s clear that conservation and breeding are central to what they do, and this feels like a working zoo rather than a staged attraction.
The zoo is privately owned and family run, and that gives it a very authentic feel. Enclosures are practical rather than themed, and there’s a strong sense that animal welfare and conservation take priority over showmanship. We were told that during the busier summer months the zoo sells out and offers talks, feeding sessions and animal encounters, including close-up experiences.
The gift shop reflects the same low-key approach, with a mix of plush toys, books and games, and an emphasis on supporting the zoo rather than heavy retail.
Overall, Hamerton Zoo Park is ideal for visitors who enjoy discovering rare animals, supporting conservation, and spending time in a calm, uncrowded environment. It may not be a highly polished, child-focused attraction, but it offers something genuinely different and quietly special.
