点评:This review difficult to do as the balance between human and animal welfare is interdependent. Without tourists there are no jobs and no need for animals in a safari park….win for animals. No tourists/no park = loss for humans, more poverty!
So, the important thing to remember about this trip is that you are helping local people have a job and bringing tourist revenue to Senegal. The animals we saw were very healthy and the rangers clearly take pride in their role as carers.
We paid Tui £120 each. Yes it included hotel pick up, ferry, bus travel and a fantastic pizza and drink, but on reflection the trip wasn’t value for money compared to the cost to visit a UK zoo or safari park like Longleat, West Mids where you would see many more animals.
We did the safari as a taster to see if we would cope with the real 2-3 day safari experience. Whilst the safari buses, the tour guides and experience was good - it cannot be denied that this is a somewhat ‘manufactured’ experience.
Our first encounter with animals came at a feeding station under big trees, so naturally there was quite a congregation of wort hog, zebra, water buffalo and antelope species. Plus Kevin the sole Rhino. (Sadly he fought with his previous partner 4 years ago and fatally injured her. There are another four females on the way to keep him company.)
We then travelled to a waterhole, which again was quite manufactured where we saw more of the same animals.
The next hour was spent listening to our guide on the radio to other guides as we set off in search of the family of giraffes. After about an hour riding round on bumpy and dusty tracks we were rewarded when we came across the entire family grazing together. A very rare offence we were told.
I’m summary, on the whole we enjoyed the trip because we got our safari photos, got to see life outside our hotel, the experience of immigration to Senegal and the local ferry. And I guess we got a flavour of what a real safari might be like.
We did not do the “walk with lions” as our tour operator did not allow it. This is an extra paid for on site. We also did not see the lions to comment on their condition. (Drugged/tamed or otherwise)
My tip: take plenty of water and a neckachief/snood to go over nose to stop dust.
