点评:This art and archeology museum is housed in the episcopal palace near the cathedral which has archeological and historical interest. The vaulted rooms, Gallo-Roman house remains, Gallo-Roman walls, the chapel and the higher 15th century palace rooms are interesting to see.
In the basement there is an exhibit on the Gallo-Roman Temple of the Halatte Forest with a large numbers of the offering statues displayed which range from crude to quite detailed. As well, there is the excavated remains of a Gallo-Roman house from the 2nd or 3rd century. The old Gallo-Roman wall can also be seen. The ground floor room displays archeological items from 400 BC to the Merovingian era as well as sculpture and art of the medieval period. Quite memorable is the Senlis head from the 13th century. On the second floor are artworks from the 16th to 19th centuries while in the 12th century chapel works of Thomas Couture, a local 19th century artist, are displayed. Another local artist, Seraphine Louis also has artworks displayed. The archeology section is excellent and I liked the emphasis on local artists.
One ticket allows you visit this museum as well as the Musée de la Vénerie. The Spahis museum is free but only open on weekends. Senlis is easy to visit being close to Paris and, for us, a 1 euro bus trip from hotels at the Charles de Gaulle Airport. With its museums, Gallo-Roman walls, interesting walks (tour A & B are excellent, tour C you could miss), restaurants and old town architecture it was an enjoyable town to visit and this museum was a highlight.
