Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad的点评
点评：I have been a longtime fan of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad until I recently rode the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. In my humble opinion, the Cumbres & Toltec blew the D&SNGRR out of the running and here is why.
1) I always disliked the departure of the D&SNGRR through the "backyards" of people's properties. On the C&TSRR, you are in the beautiful wilderness of northern New Mexico (or Colorado if you choose to depart from Antonito) as soon as you leave the depot.
2) The D&SNGRR offers a 45 mile round-trip scenic excursion through southern Colorado. The C&TSRR offers a 64 mile one-way excursion of scenic travel through northern New Mexico and southern Colorado between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO.
3) I never cared for the nearly 2-hour "commercial" layover in Silverton before the round-trip back to Durango. If you choose an excursion on the C&TSRR, lunch is included in the price of your ticket. Lunch is served cafeteria-style about half-way through the excursion at Osier Station at an elevation of 9,637 ft. There was a nice variety of food offered including vegan fare and the food was very good.
4) Last but not least, the C&TSRR still offers excursions on actual coal-burning locomotives, the D&SNGRR does not.
For these reasons as well as the beautiful scenery, I highly recommend the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. You will not be disappointed.
I also highly recommend Vista del Rio for lodging, Fina's Diner for breakfast/lunch and check out the Local for dinner.
