点评:Our final mini-break of 2024 was underway, with a short drive into south-east Wales. This was enroute to Monmouth, where were staying overnight. Our chosen route deliberately took a slight detour to pass through Tintern, a small town with a large abbey. We had stayed here at a lovely private hotel for a few days on a mini-break in June 2023.
Today it was just a drive-through Tintern, and out at the northern end, then journeying-on towards Monmouth. In doing-so we passed by, and decided to revisit, this very charming old railway station located about midway between Tintern and Brockweir. The railway station was closed in 1959, and it is now the site of an interesting local history museum housed in some old railway carriages. The station buildings (platform and waiting room) have been restored, and now house this café.
We parked-up in the modest carpark a few minutes after midday. We didn’t notice the parking payment point as we arrived, but did as we returned to our route after our snack lunch. We assume that we hadn’t needed to pay; as the ticket machine was outside the entrance to the museum carriages (which were not visited on this occasion). We were parked in spaces near to the café entrance.
There were quite a few lunchtime customers in the café, but gradually as they finished their snacks their tables became available. We ordered two Coronation Chicken Rolls, and also two Americano coffees (both with hot milk). When our order arrived we were surprised by the size of the rolls. They were very large; about 2½ inches thick. This wasn’t a really an issue for me, especially as the texture and taste of the bread was good. The Coronation Chicken filling however was quite mean and there was a lot of bread compared with the filling. My Partner didn’t hugely enjoy these rolls, they were too dry and substantial for what she wanted. The vegetable crisps added to our plates were excellent, and I had also purchased a packet of Salt and Cider vinegar crisps which were also good with the rolls. The coffee was also good and the staff were really friendly and helpful.
The café and the service was pleasant. There was a reproduction electrified vintage style stove fire, that provided just about enough heat to make us comfortable. We didn’t stay long; soon continuing our journey to Monmouth.
