Walkable city but needs polish.
Downtown Wilmington的点评
点评：The Riverwalk is about 1.5 miles along the river. There is an outdoor theater at the north end, not far from multiple hotels so that you can walk to the venue and leave your car parked at your hotel. From the hotels It is about .5 mile south to the center of the Riverwalk, at Market St.
The people that live and work in Wilmington were all very friendly and helpful.
The Visitor Center is a Small octagonal building, but we never saw it open because it closed too early to consult about evening plans or advice for morning excursions. There were sandwich boards about boat excursions. Thankfully, our hotel had excellent tourist maps and places we were interested in had informational websites.
The restrooms in back of the Visitor Center building was not kept fresh or especially clean but at least they were open.
There are many restaurants within walking distance from the Riverwalk.
The most disappointing thing is the parking. Most tourist brochures I read said that the first hour was free, but we found no place free for the first hour and the price high, $4 or $5 per hour. As a tourist you have to do some investigation on where we need to be and if the place is open. As an example, we were looking for a specific ice cream store and when we arrived they weren’t open, as in closed with paper over the windows! Our GPS had shown it as open. We had to find another shop about a half mile further south.
There was a homeless person searching a trash can, sections of the Riverwalk had barricades, presumably for construction but didn’t appear to be an active worksite, and saw 3 rats run under a garage/storage shed along the Riverwalk. The city has really worked to make it more presentable but I probably won’t return.
