Could have been so much better

点评：There was no information on the website about meet times. After 3 unanswered calls, I booked the date my brother and two sons could do and paid the deposit as it was linked to a TV appearance. I then rang to get a suitable, hopefully late morning time slot. Alas they could only offer an 8.30am meet and because with travel and disruption to routine this would greatly affect one of our party, I was sad and explained we couldn’t do it. “Sorry your £400 deposit is not refundable”. I explained I couldn’t find this info anywhere, could prove my attempts to call and also didn’t understand why everyone - all 40+ or so sky divers had to arrange at the same time. “Weather” was one answer. Surely any possible weather issue does not affect staggered arrival times?!
Long story short, the affected member of our party said he’d give it go and what is the worst that could happen and we were allowed to arrive a bit late.
“You can’t jump together, you need to be in two twos”. I have to choose which son I jump with?!? My brother stepped up and said he would jump on his own so the 3 of us could stay together.
We ended up jumping at 12.30pm after being sat in their cafe for 4 hours. The weather was perfect.
You know when you are watching a crap film but stick with it and then the ending has a great twist so it feels worth it? Or doing a marathon for the finish line feeling 😂.
The instructors were brilliant, all chatty, made us feel very safe and comfortable (although one of us got the smoker and subsequent breath which we’d mentioned before, you know when you get your hair cut after they’ve had a fag break and it stinks 🤪). The equipment was top notch. The briefing video was inaudible but my brother found the volume but then they just walked in mid-flow and cut it off to get harnessed up. There were also 2 massive farts at check-in, but these were superb.
Great fun on the plane, I initiated happy birthday for the two new friends having a special day. We’d bonded waiting although her instructor unnecessarily said for her to ignore us during pre-boarding fun. I asked to go after my sons especially in case the 16 year old had a wobble but they wouldn’t accommodate. Watching them came down and feel their buzz made it all worth while - this magical thing that humans can do.
When I did it in New Zealand I was bunged up and the pressure made it very uncomfortable then. I had anti-histamine and Sudafed (other snot killers are available) just in case this time and was fine. Alas I was clean shaven and not prepared for 1 degree wind hitting my face at terminal velocity, although my party were not affected by this as much. And actually it was warmer when we jumped than the first divers. Strangely 10,000ft would therefore have been a better experience for me this time.
It’s fantastic thing any Sky Diving place can give to us mortals but get someone bright into the business and use technology to make it a much better overall experience. One final niggle, the Friday (cheaper than weekend) price of £272 price I signed up to ended up being £288 each with an explanation of ‘insurance’ . Add that to the 4 hours of consumption in the cafe …
The final note was that our party member did get affected and it was a sad end to the day, with the only salvation being we will talk about the jump and check-in blow-offs for many years to come 😁.
