Important Women's History Site in Newcastle, Maine
Frances Perkins Center的点评
点评:We were delighted to find this women's history treasure while traveling in Maine. Located in Newcastle, this National Historic Landmark is the ancestral home and place of burial of pioneering and influential, Frances Perkins (1880-1965), a key architect of many aspects of the New Deal, including Social Security, minimum wage and the 40-hour work week. She was the first woman to hold a US Cabinet position (in FDR's administration). Currently, the home is being renovated, but an excellent self-guided exhibit is available to tour in the homestead barn from June 15--August 30. The property is gorgeous with many walking trails. The property consists of 57 acres of woods and fields along the Damariscotta River. Staff were knowledgable and lovely. Nearby Damarisotta is a wonderful town with a great main street that includes an excellent book store and lots of excellent restaurants. We look forward to returning and exploring the Perkins home when it opens after restoration next year.
