点评:Regarded as the oldest Hindu temple in Bhubaneshwar, the Parashurameshwar Temple is dedicated to Shiva: it draws its name from Parashuram (who was an avatar of Vishnu), and is derived from ‘Parashuram’ + ‘ishwar’ = ‘the lord of Parashuram’, since Parashuram was a devotee of Shiva and his devotion won for him from Shiva the boon of immortality. The temple stands in a quiet walled enclosure beside a towering banyan tree. Though it’s a functional temple and there is even a priest here, not many people seem to come by: when we visited, there was only other person, a man who was making a , video of the place.
The temple, which is estimated to date back to the 7th century CE, is exquisitely carved, with friezes depicting scenes from Shiva’s life; the saptamatrikas (seven aspects of Shakti, the ‘mother’); exquisitely carved elephants, lions, birds, and more; and mythical creatures. The level of detailing and intricacy is mind-boggling.
No entry fee is charged.
