As a foreign student in India, I had high hopes of experiencing the spiritual essence of Tirumala alongside my friend from Switzerland, who traveled all the way to India solely to visit this sacred site. We invested a considerable amount of time, energy, and approximately $600 USD to make this journey from Bengaluru to Tirumala, with the intention to pray, offer donations, and witness the revered atmosphere of this holy place.
Unfortunately, our experience was marred by a very distressing encounter with the local police at the site. Despite having all our documents in order, including valid passports, the officers were uncooperative, unwelcoming, and treated us with a level of suspicion and hostility that left us shocked and disheartened. We tried to calmly engage in conversation to understand and resolve the situation, but we were met with arrogance, a lack of transparency, and an unwillingness to answer our questions.
We were ultimately denied entry without clear explanation or proper treatment. The disappointment was profound—not just because we were turned away, but because of how we were made to feel: unwelcome, disrespected, and misunderstood in a place that is supposed to symbolize peace, devotion, and compassion.
While the spiritual significance and sanctity of Tirumala cannot be denied, our personal experience with the people managing the site—especially the authorities—was deeply negative. It’s heartbreaking to say that we will never return, and I would advise fellow international travelers to reconsider visiting, especially if you expect respectful treatment and a welcoming atmosphere.
This experience has left a lasting mark, not because of the place, but because of how we were treated by the people entrusted with its care.
