点评:This is part of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and is a thriving Elephant Conservation and Rehabilitation Centre having about 25 Elephants including Calves, Cows and Bulls.
It would be worthwhile to mention here that ‘The Elephant Whispers’, the Oscar-winning documentary was filmed in 2022 entirely in this same centre only. The protagonists of the documentary – an indigenous couple named Bomman and Bellie, and the orphaned baby Indian elephant named ‘Raghu’ – are all still very much there.
The extensive campus located on the banks of the Moyar River is kept neat and clean and is very well-maintained by its staff despite the heavy footfalls of tourists and visitors who throng the centre to see the elephants being hand-fed and meticulously cared for.
For those who go on the jungle safari, the ticket fare covers a visit to this Elephant Camp. Others can buy a ticket from the Reception and Interpretation Centre for a nominal amount of Rs. 30/- per head. The elephant feeding time is on a half-an-hour slot each of 08:30 to 09:00 in the mornings and between 05:30 to 06:00 in the evenings.
To watch Elephants at such close quarters and to see and experience how they are fed and cared for, this place provides an amazing opportunity. Each of the residents of this camp has its own name and they respond to their mahouts obediently like a dog would to its master !
All the Elephants in the camp are regularly supervised by a team of Veterinarians to ensure their well-being. Likewise, each Elephant is given its own special diet, depending on what the Veterinarians decide. The morning and evening feed are systematically arranged according to the names of each of the Elephants in the Camp, which they are fed at the specified time slots. The rest of the day, the Elephants are led to the forests nearby by their handlers and are allowed to feed in their natural surroundings, as they would in the wild. The Moyar River which flows nearby is the place where these elephants are led for their daily baths.
A visit to the Elephant Camp is a must and would surely be worth one’s time while at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Theppakadu.
