点评:Friday 25th April we visited West Bay, a coastal resort in Dorset. It was originally known as Bridport Harbour but was changed to West Bay with the extension of the rail line to the harbour in the 19th century.
The main reason for our visit was to complete the task to see all of the elephants, statues dotted around the village, in the Stampede by the Sea. It was also an opportunity to take in the sights and landmarks in the area.
We parked up in the Town and began our search for the elephant statues that were sited here, we did have map of their positions so not that difficult.
We walked over the bridge that spans the River Britt which flows through the harbour on its way to the sea. Here there were kiosks selling doughnuts beach accessories crabbing kits, fish and chips, ice-cream and souvenirs. At the time of our visit, along the quayside, there was a street seller with jewellery and nick nacks for sale.
Close by is Fishermans Green where the historic old Salt House is situated.
The harbour is flanked, on both sides, and protected by two harbour piers, East and West, we walked the length of both. Each had had a elephant statue as well as their own attractions and points of interest including beaches.
Around the quayside there a number of boats, including rowing and fishing, resting up on top of the pier along side the lobster pots.
From the Harbour there were numerous activities available such as guided canoe tours, river boat trips, paddleboarding, boat charters and Lyme Bay sea school as well as fishing trips
At the top of West Pier is Place Saint Vaast la Houge which is in tribute to the Town in Normandy, north-western France, which Bridport has been twined with since 1979. From the Pier there are views along West Beach and the cliffs and coastal pathway stretching into the distance.
From the east pier there are views along the coast and the West Bay Cliffs. It is also home to the Discovery Centre Museum and the Bayside Sauna.
