点评：This is a Strasbourg "Must See", from which you will get the best pictures of the city. If you are visiting on a sunny day, I strongly recommend you visit in the afternoon with the sun angle illuminating the city and Petite France's Ponts Couverts. There is other significance to the structure but the main reason to visit is for the best pictures from the roof of the structure.
The name of the structure in French is Vauban's barrier and is significance lies in those two words. Vauban references the creator of the defensive fortification referencing to the Marquis de Vauban, Sebastian le Prestre. The military success of France under Louis XIV in large part is due to great military leaders in France at the time, and the Marquis was the greatest military engineer of his day designing many of the defensive works that provided Louis XIV success during his reign. Much of France's success was the direct result of Vauban's genius, and despite being late in his life at the time France took Alsace, two of his significant works reside in Alsace. The first is the town of Neu-Breisach build on the French west bank opposite the German town of Breisach and protecting the road to Colmar. The second is a barrier meant to dam the waters of the Ile River to flood the areas to the west and south of the city. Today the structure continues to straddle the River Ile with open doors to let the water flow to the Rhine.
You can walk through the interior which now house statue from around the city. However, most people climb the stairs to the roof for the best views of Strasbourg. It really is that beautiful that no visit to Strasbourg is complete without seeing. Now I highly recommend that you make the time to visit.
