点评:I am not particularly into animals, but this place absolutely fascinated me! In fact, it turned out to be one of the most wonderful experiences we had in Bali.
The Forest & Atmosphere
The surroundings are absolutely beautiful. Lush tropical greenery, enormous trees, ancient temples, incredible stone carvings, and winding pathways create an extraordinary atmosphere. It genuinely feels like walking through a tropical jungle rather than visiting a conventional tourist attraction.
And the sounds! The entire forest was filled with unbelievably loud, almost deafening noises, something resembling cicadas, but at ten times the volume! We never quite figured out whether these were genuine sounds of the forest or something being played through hidden speakers. Either way, they certainly contributed to the atmosphere!
What I particularly loved was how natural the whole experience felt. This was nothing like a zoo, or one of those attractions where unfortunate elephants are repeatedly bathed by one group of tourists after another. Here, the monkeys were simply living their lives, apparently completely unconcerned about the hundreds of people watching them.
The Monkeys
Our very first encounter was rather shocking, though! Just after passing through the entrance lobby, we spotted a man shooting at monkeys with a slingshot. WTF?! We were absolutely stunned. Only afterwards did we realise he was a member of staff. I still have no idea what exactly he was trying to achieve.
Fortunately, the rest of our experience was wonderful.
The monkeys were absolutely fascinating to observe. Eating, sleeping, grooming themselves, scratching, playing, or simply sitting around doing absolutely nothing. Despite being completely different animals, their behaviour reminded me so much of our cat! Apparently, a good meal, a comfortable place to sleep, and a thorough grooming session are universal priorities.
I loved watching them going about their daily routines, seemingly paying very little attention to the people wandering around them. There were monkeys everywhere, and observing their interactions and individual personalities was endlessly entertaining.
One thing I genuinely cannot understand, though, is why some visitors insist on getting their faces practically against the monkeys to take selfies. These are wild animals, not cuddly toys! Why would anyone assume that getting so close to them is perfectly safe? Surely respecting their space is not such a difficult concept.
The Statues & Stone Carvings
I was particularly fascinated by the extraordinary stone statues and intricately carved walls throughout the forest.
Interestingly, when I compared our photographs from September 2026 with pictures taken in October 2025, I noticed that some of the sculptures had previously been covered in beautiful, fresh, bright green moss. I actually found them much more beautiful that way! By the time we visited, much of that greenery was gone, revealing the grey stone underneath.
I wonder whether the sculptures are cleaned periodically to remove the vegetation, or whether the difference is simply seasonal. Whatever the reason, I definitely preferred their lush, vibrant green appearance!
Facilities & Exploring
The sanctuary is beautifully maintained, with numerous pathways winding through the forest, offering different perspectives of the enormous trees, ancient temples, and fascinating stone carvings.
Information boards were thoughtfully placed throughout the grounds, explaining the various sights and providing guidance on how to behave around the monkeys. There were also plenty of places to sit down, relax, and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Another detail I absolutely appreciated was how easy it was to find our way around. Maps were displayed at numerous locations throughout the sanctuary, and right by the ticket counter there was even a QR code linking to the sanctuary's own app, which included a map as well. For a map enthusiast like me, this was an absolute delight!
One particularly thoughtful detail was the availability of washbasins with running water in several locations. On a hot tropical day, being able to wet a scarf or simply cool yourself down a little is incredibly welcome!
The enormous trees also provide plenty of shade, making wandering around the forest surprisingly pleasant even in the heat.
A Tourist Trap? Seriously?
I was genuinely surprised to read reviews describing this place as a tourist trap. I honestly cannot imagine what those reviewers experienced, because we certainly didn't encounter anything of the sort.
Nobody pressured us to buy anything, participate in activities, or pay for additional experiences. There were no paid photo opportunities every few metres, no endless rows of restaurants, and none of the commercial nonsense we encountered at places such as Tegalalang Rice Fields.
We simply wandered wherever we wanted, admired the extraordinary surroundings, watched the monkeys, explored the pathways, and enjoyed the atmosphere.
We spent several hours here and could easily have stayed even longer if our schedule hadn't forced us to move on.
Overall
For me, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary was so much more than an attraction where tourists come to see monkeys. It was a wonderful combination of spectacular tropical nature, fascinating wildlife, traditional Balinese culture, and an almost magical jungle atmosphere.
And perhaps the greatest compliment I can give it is that, despite not being particularly interested in animals, I absolutely loved every minute of our visit.
A truly wonderful experience, and one of my favourite places in Bali!
