I had high expectations based on the photos on Justin's profile, and after speaking with him on the phone, he seemed trustworthy. However, our actual experience was extremely disappointing.
We arrived at his house at 6:30 AM as instructed, only to be told to sit and wait on the boat while he talked about his personal life—his legal disputes with tenants, his donations to a Filipino person, and how sharing his life was “part of the fishing experience.” But if that’s the case, what was the point of us waking up at 3 AM to get there on time?
He then went inside his house to chat with his wife, saying she asked him to review court documents on the way for at least 15 min. Meanwhile, we waited for an hour before he finally started moving the boat. He dragged it to the beach with a tractor while we sat on soaking wet seats with exposed foam. When we asked for something dry to sit on, he handed us wet cushion.
He also said he would take us to check lobster traps, but when we got there, most of the bait had already turned into bones, meaning the traps had been abandoned for a long time. It felt like he was just using us for free labor. We pulled up five traps, and there wasn’t a single lobster.
The overall hygiene of the boat was terrible. The towels were sticky, and the knives were covered in old blood. Most captains assist with fishing or at least provide a simple lunch like bread and sausages, but Justin’s boat had nothing. He did change fishing spots a few times, but we 6 people caught around 20 fishes max. I believe we missed the best fishing hours because of all the delays. Worse, every time we moved to a new spot, Justin was either on a phone call, scrolling social media, or video chatting with that Filipino person.
