点评:History permeates Circle Drive. Historical markers and other signs describe how DeFuniak Springs is where Florida's educational system was launched. Hopefully, this achievement is celebrated regularly.
The walk around the circular, spring-fed Lake DeFuniak is easy and pleasant. To best view the historic homes, structures, and historical markers, stroll along the sidewalk marking the perimeter of the small body of water. The sidewalks are generally in good condition and there is plenty of shade. If you prefer to be close to the water and to walk a shorter distance, you should choose the path at the water's edge.
If you visit DeFuniak Springs on a weekend at any time other than Saturday morning when Baldwin Ave. shuts down until noon to host the weekly Farmers' Market, it will feel like a ghost town. Most downtown establishments close at noon on Saturdays and do not reopen until Monday or Tuesday.
I was surprised that there was not more activity around the lake on a beautiful late summer day. The town should construct a playground near the designated swimming area. On a sunny Saturday, when the real feel temperatures surged past 90 degrees, not a single person was swimming at the beach or even hanging out in a shady area near the lake. Perhaps at other times this community treasure is a gathering place.
To start my stroll along Circle Drive, I parked near the historically significant library, which was open and had a variety of patrons inside. There were some serious chess games being played by men separated in age by several decades. The library did feel alive. The neighboring DeFuniak Springs Garden Club Library Reading Garden, while probably lovely at one time, needs some TLC. If you enter the garden, you will find yourself on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail that begins at the home of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter in Plains, Georgia.
Lake DeFuniak and Circle Drive are the beating heart of this historic city. Every effort should he made to preserve and share the history of the structures lining the waterway and to make this unique area a gathering place for the community.
