West Bali National Park is brimming with wildlife - Idris is the man to take you around

点评：We contacted Idris (not a Welshman but a local Balinese) well in advance and he sent us a list of the various trips that he offers. It is best to contact him via WhatsApp on the following number:

Compared with many things on the island, his trips are not cheap but they really are excellent.
On the first morning he met us really early and took us into the park for about 3 1/2 hours of bird-watching. In that time we saw over forty species of bird, each of them new to us. This included a pair of Bali starlings and many different species of kingfisher.
The next day we set off to towards the ferry port of Gilmanuk but then went down a side track and out on a boat in the secluded cove. We learnt a lot about the mangroves but the birdwatching was disappointing, although we did see a small blue / cerulean kingfisher diving for fish and had a great sighting of a lesser adjutant stork, fishing for eels. When we returned to the car, there was a pair of Bali starlings in a tree by the car park.
We then went back towards our hotel (The Menjangan ecolodge) and set off in a long-tailed boat to Menjangan Island, where the snorkelling was superb. Idris came in with us and pointed out many fish which we may well have missed. He provided a great lunch on the island where we were watched by a couple of the local deer (Javan rusa or Sunda sambar).
At times Idris is not that easy to understand, which can be a bit frustrating but his knowledge of the fauna and flora more than makes up for this.
When we were back in the hotel, in the evening, in came messages from Idris, sharing links to the relevant pages on the Merlin app, letting us know which species we had seen throughout the day; excellent service.
