点评:This is a big church – almost too big to photograph from the outside. Set at the top of the town near the castle, it was originally a Priory. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it became the parish church.
The church was substantially rebuilt in the C19th. Only the tower and spire were kept, although part of the original masonry can be seen at the west end.
It was designed to seat 1000 worshipers. Part of the rood screen has been moved from across the chancel to the back of the nave, forming an attractive screen. The rood cross still hangs in the chancel. The rather dark painting behind the altar depicts the Adoration of the Magi.
The Memorial chapel is at the end of the north aisle. The Lady Chapel behind a screen is at the end of the south aisle.
One ofd the old bells is dsisplayed at trhe bck of the church. A sign says this was used as a fire bell and rung by a wire hanging down the outside if the church. By the entrance is an old stone stoup for holy water, on a modern wooden stand.
Perhaps the most significant feature of the church are the stained glass windows designed by CE Kempe.
This probably doesn’t rank as a ‘must see’ church although it is attractive and worth having a look if at the top end of the town.
