点评:We did a 7 day tour "Toward the Algarve", which included 5 days of biking (about 340kms). There were 9 people in total on the tour, with a mix of regular and e-bikes. We varied in age from mid 40s to mid 70s. Considering that the tour was the last of the season, the weather was exceptional, with only one day of rain/storms on the last day. The hotels/meals were exceptional. Our guide, Andrea, was patient, funny, helpful, and informative as to the areas we biked through. His smile and sense of humour kept everyone on schedule in a comfortable and friendly way. He shared a lot of info on the flora, fauna, and industries/agriculture in each of the areas. He happened to hear that I was missing "my vegetables" as many of the places we had eaten over our first 2 weeks of travelling were protein/carb heavy. He went out of his way to order veggies for each of the suppers, which was appreciated! At one point, the group asked to stop at a coffee shop, which was not part of the initial schedule, and Andrea, readjusted the plan to accommodate the request.
All the equipment was of top quality, and clean, including the van. The bikes use Garmin GPSs to "self guide" each rider. Fair warning to those that need glasses... the screens are small and hard to see in the sun light. Polarized sunglasses didn't help. I personally needed to put my reading glasses on at times to be able to see where the turns were, etc. I wish there had been "voice" assistance since that would have helped to know which turns were coming where couldn't see the screen. I wasn't alone with this frustration, and honestly it is a bit dangerous, because you end up looking down more than you would like to have to. Also, the system lagged sometimes, which sometimes meant missing a turn and having to go back. Luckily, we had a rider that was experienced with this unit and often waiting for the others in the group at the critical turns to ensure no one missed them! .
The days were all well organized and timed by Andrea and he kept the group well informed as to departure times, break times, etc. Since the fall days are shorter, he did a good job ensuring we arrived before sundown each day. The last day, was a bit tricky weather-wise with high winds, and heavy rain/ hail potential. Andrea navigated us through the storms with perfect timing, allowing us to finish our ride and see all the sights. Obviously, there was a bit of good luck, but he watched the weather closely and was ready to pick us up should there have been a need. His picnic lunches were always good. The only thing we wondered is if there could have been a sit down lunch in the towns where there were little cafes, instead of a picnic, just to change it up a bit, and break up the biking a bit-- there were a couple of longer days (about 85 kms) that felt like "just" biking since we were inland and often on the sides of highways where there were not great views. We had hoped to ride along the coast, so we were in a bit disappointed to be biking mostly inland-- when we asked Andrea, he explained that there aren't many bike trails/doable paths along the coast so that wasn't really possible. Would have been good to know this as part of tour info since most of the pictures do show "view points" and coastal bike paths, which is a bit misleading. Having said that, the view points that were at the end of the trails and some of the days had great views even from the highways! Breathtaking in spots and definitely made the trek worth it.
